Let's explain what this famous acronym means: AOC
The "Terroir de la Clape" is a specific area within the "Coteaux du Languedoc" Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC).
The AOC is a regulation that supervises cultivation and vinification practices in order to guarantee both the origin and the quality of the wine. The AOC regulation is more restrictive than "Vin de Table" or "Vin de Pays", limiting quantity to ensure quality.
Indeed, the grape varieties authorised by an AOC are selected for their adaptation to the climate and the quality of the grapes. The vines are planted on selected plots of land within a strictly defined geographic area. The yield by hectare is limited. Vinification is traditional but allows modern techniques to enhance the qualities of AOC wines. For example, the use of infusing oak shavings to give a woody taste instead of barrel ageing is prohibited, but temperature regulation during fermentation is allowed.
"Terroir de La Clape" is an additional level of qualification within the AOC. The "Terroir" (soil and climate quality and specificity, local viticultural tradition) is a delimited zone of excellence. It is subject to even stricter rules than those of the "AOC" : lower yields, higher quality, etc.
All Château d'Anglès wines are produced within the "Terroir de La Clape" area of the "Coteaux du Languedoc" Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée.
